Nō Tuawhakarere
compiled Piki Knap and Shane Te Ruki
A compilation of over 160 historical images relating to the Te Rohe Potae region. The images are beautifully presented and reflect the life of Māori in the King Country region between the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The images contained in this book represent only a small part of taonga photographs that are held in library, museum and private collections throughout the country. There is the old adage ‘He kōtuku kai whakaata’ it has many applications, but, in this case we could look to emulate the kōtuku by taking the time to look deeply and intently at these images of the past, and, perhaps we may see ourselves looking back. Ponder these images, discuss, recall and recount stories and lessons with our tamariki and mokopuna. This alone is reason enough to bring these images together, image from the past - nō tuawhakarere.

The images are drawn from across the Rohe Pōtae from the late 1800s through tothe early 1900s. The images are of our tūpuna in their place and in their time.Their lives are told in their eyes and faces and in their surroundings. There are few details provided with each image. The photographers often provided scant details of the subjects, indeed many of the photographers themselves were not recorded.
